The Message ....

lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava lava la

Time:11 30 am
Location : Bugis National Library

Our message(aim and objective) is to encourage smokers to quit smoking and their habits.
We want to place emphasis on how smoking affects your daily performance like
  • daily work
  • sports lifestyle
  • shopping
  • walking in a faster pace
  • spoils impression
  • hygiene purpose
  • time and energy wasted
http://www.zocard.com/pdfs/news/casestudy/2009051242639872Case%20Study%20-%20HPB%20Anti-Smoking%20ZoCards.pdf

After discussing and come to derive to the main message we came across this link above which is actually a very good reference case study for our project. It's a website on how Zo cards create their purpose to serve the their target audience.

Our Target audience range from : (17- 25 years old )/ young adults
: target smokers

After we came up
Here's some research found to understand the difference between Tag-line and Message =D

what is a Tag-line:

A tagline is a slogan which succinctly, memorably, and descriptively sums up a company or product. The art of crafting a tagline is quite complex, and several consulting companies actually specialize in creating taglines for their clients. A well constructed tagline can endure in the minds of consumers for years; some taglines have actually outlived their products. Once a company has a tagline, it includes the tagline in all its marketing materials to get the tagline into the minds of consumers so that they think about that company frequently.

What is a message:

No campaign is strong without a good plan, and no plan is strong without a good message. Message is what drives the campaign plan, it sets the parameters in which the strategy is devised.

It is important to know the difference between message and strategy, because they are often confused. Message answers the question “Why am I running for office?” while strategy answers the questions “How am I going to win?” In order to devise the strategy, the campaign must first plan its message. It must decide what it wants to say, before it decides how it is going to say it.

The following schedule for the week of 16/11/09 :

Third-Hand Smoking

  • Team met up on the sunday to present and show possible sketches of what could be the best representation of the delivery of the message.

Did another set of suveys which shows the different age range of smokers response towards smoking. After looking at the sketches, we have noticed that there is so miuch we can tell about third -hand smoking but we have to be more specific and be strong in the focal point so we have come to a decision to either place our focus either about general facts on third-hand smoking or narrow down to solely how bad it will affect kids or even babies.

We have also discovered that it can greatly affect the IQ of a person. For babies ,it will be double the impact of the IQ.

This two links above clearly shows what are the harmful chemicals that can be found in the ciagarette.

(This link above is is a short clip which clearly explains about second hand and third hand smoke ) She is known as :

Meeting at AMK Hub

Meeting:
4th November 2009
11am
Amk Hub (Nebo Cafe)
Jeff.Angeline.Peiyu
Agenda:
  • Reasons why we have chosen to do on 3rd hand smoking
  • Ways to improve on the project
  • What to present for Midpoint

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What we have achieved:

Reasons why we have chosen on 3rd hand smoking?

From our 30men strong survey, we have found out that 28 out of 30 smokers do not know about 3rd hand smoking. From the survey, we can be able to tell that they (the smokers) know about 2nd hand smoking and will be responsible enough to do it when they like it. Thus we drawn a conclusion that if they know about 3rd hand smoking, they might care about it and be concious in what they are doing. Why we want to do 3rd hand smoking is because we as the non-smoker would not like to be affected and definitely hope that the world can be a better place to live in.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What to be put into our Midpoint Presentation?

  • Why we have chosen 3rd hand smoking?
  • Brief information about 3rd hand smoking
  • Process of coming to the idea of 3rd hand smoking
  • Final work
  • What we expect to achieve
  • Predicted response from viewers
  • Challenges faced
  • Survey
  • Rough Phototype of the final work

We as a team hope that we are able to sumbit all of those points listed above for midpoint presentation. Like what Rawzah had advised us we should have our final sketch up ready and after midpoint is all about construction. Thats our aim and we will aim to keep it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to get to our aims, we have a timeline set!

Timeline:

8th Nov:

What we had discussed:

  • info gathered from Survey

  • base on the results from the survey tabulation, we have came up with supportive edvidence and settle on our stonger message to bring across.

  • educating the target audience abt the existing issue abt 3rd-hand smoking

  • with the reinforcement abt the 3rd-hand smoking, we can reverse and further enhance about the 2nd-hand smoking since people in the society has already know about 2nd-hand smoking.

Our message: Innocent Babies Smoking

To educate the smokers about how harmful is 3rd-hand smoking which has been linger around without knowing its existence.

What to do:

Meeting with Advisor

Meeting:
21st Oct 2009
11am
Republic Polytechnic Library
Jeff. Angeline.Peiyu
Agenda:
· Keeping the advisor on track with team’s progress
· Guidance from advisor in order to continue on right track
· Things to work out for next week’s meeting

Previous meeting (18th Oct 2009) our team discuss on what the issues that we were thinking of doing. Issues thought of were:

· Social Responsibility

· Environment after smoking

· 3rd hand smoking

We also generated ideas that what we were going to do as our installation but it contained much flaws so we decided to give the idea a 2nd thought. After discussing with Rawzah we finally get a clearer in what we are doing and slowed down our process and look at the issues once again. Key points to take note:

· 3 issues were too much to handle

· What, Why and Who is the question we need to solve when we pick our issues

· Paper work 1st before going to creative process. Easier to work this way.

After getting notes from dearest advisor we move on to discuss on our own. We have decided to create a survey to ask smokers around Singapore about their attitudes towards smoking, as all the members in the team do not smoke, we that it is a need as we need to know how smokers think. Therefore, this is a task we set ourselves to complete for this week.

The survey questions were:

Age:
Gender:
When do you start smoking?

1. Why do you smoke?
2. What do you think of smoking?
3. Would you smoke in front of your friends (who do not smoke)?
4. What do you think of 2nd hand smoking?
5. Do you care about 2nd hand smoking?
6. Have you ever heard about 3rd hand smoking?
7. Do you flick your ashes or throw your cigarette butt on the floor?
8. Do you call yourself a responsible smoker?
9. How many cigarettes do you smoke a day?

These questions were chosen because it is of relevance to what our team’s issues. Therefore we find that it would be crucial for us to find out how smokers think. We have set out with 10 surveys each, a total of 30.

Venue :Raffles city
Time :3pm
Date : 19/10/2009

Decided on doing Social issue:
  1. Thrid-hand smoking
  2. Second-hand smoking
  3. Being considerte to the environment

How are we going to create the art work that consist all 3 issue and circle back to one main objective.

Previously we discussed on the guerilla marketing

Guerilla marketing is an unconventional way of performing marketing activities intended to get maximum results from minimal resources. You see, guerilla marketing is all about creativity and psychology instead of experience, judgement, and guesswork. Because of the lack of resources, small business must use a different set of marketing strategies and tactics than big business. The example used above could be conducted at a minimal expense, while advertising on radio or local T.V. stations would cost much more.

*pros and cons of guerilla marketing

*some facts and issues on smoking

All about smoking

Meeting:
14 Oct 2009
2pm
RP Library
Agenda:
Presenting our individual assignment on smoking issues in Singapore
Jeff: Smoking
Angeline : Guerilla Marketing, Smoking
Pei Yu: Guerilla Marketing
We have decided to post our individual on the blog to show what we have found out. So here is mine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Health Promotion Board and National Smoking Control Programme:

National Smoking Control Programme (NSCP) was created in the 1970s together with the introduction of laws restricting smoking in public places and prohibiting tobacco advertisements. In 1986, the NSCP also came out with long-term programme for smoking control together with Ministry of Health. The theme was, "Towards a Nation of Non-smokers." In 2001, the HEalth Promotion Board was formed to oversee and coordinate health promotion programmes, including NSCP, in Singapore.

Aim of Programme and key strategies:

The NSCP aims to reduce smoking prevalence in Singapore by preventing the initiation of smoking among young people, educating, motivating and assisting smokers to give up smoking and promoting a climate conducive for non-smokers to remain free from the harmful effects of environmental tobacco smoke and establish non-smoking as a social norm.

Strategies used,
  1. Public education
  2. Legislation
  3. Tobacco taxation
  4. Partnerships
  5. Provision of quit smoking services.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All about banning of public smoking:

Despite it’s existing stringent laws regarding public smoking, Singapore can benefit greatly if it made a complete ban on public smoking. By making a complete ban on public smoking Singapore would be joining other cities around the world that have said enough it enough with polluted air and preventable health problems. A smoke-free Singapore would be seen as an attractive, progressive city, worth visiting, worth living in and for businesses, worth investing in. The arguments against a ban on public smoking are purely reactionary and when scrutinized appear to simply go up in smoke.

Advantages towards banning of public smoking:

Second hand smoke kills:

Singapore is a great walking city, it will just kill people if people around you are puffing away their cigrattes.

Smoking hurts the economy:

A smoke-free Singapore would help reduce the amount of money lost to the country’s economy from healthcare costs, absenteeism and loss of productivity. A 1997 study showed that the cost to the Singapore economy from these smoking effects was between $700 and $800 million annually

Smoking ban will improve the economy:

With a large amount of money being spent on smoking, the money saved can be used to help to boost the economy.

Meet Up

Venue : Rp Library
Time : 12noon-2pm
Date : 14 Oct 2009
Team members: Jeff , Peiyu , Angeline

Each of us presented to one another of the research we had done over the last week. We also had discussion on the different ideas that we can get from the info gathered. What we will be posting soon will be the different aspects of research eahc of us had done.

Peiyu-did research on the smoking issue; about guerilla marketing and the examples.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SMOKE
  • Burning tobacco in cigars, cigarettes and pipes.
  • Tobacco –carbon monoxide
    –nicotine (poisonous alkaloid)
    –ammonia (used in floor cleaners)
    –arsenic (found in rat poison)
    –DDT (used in insecticide)
–carbon monoxide (found in car exhaust fumes)
–cadmium (cancer-causing substance, used in car batteries)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Third-hand smoke?
  • Tobacco smoke contamination that remains after the cigarette has been extinguished
  • Is a health hazard for infants and children; especially when it lingers in furniture and materials for days
  • "The level of toxicity in cigarette smoke is just as great when compared to other environmental toxins [such as particles found in automobile exhaust]"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Differences

2nd-hand smoke
Smoke from a burning cigarette, pipe or cigar inhale by people nearby
•Can harm babies or affects the development of the unborn
•Kids are more prone to be affected may suffer breathing problems

3rd-hand smoke
The tobacco toxins that build up overtime
•the stuff that remains [after visible or "second-hand smoke" has dissipated from the air]
•Unquantifiable; depends on the space
•Kids & babies will have the risk of low IQ with the interact of toxin e.g. floor

Guerilla Marketing

•Unconventional marketing designed for low budgets and maximum impact
•Main investment should be time, energy, imagination & information — not money

What’s so special?

–Inexpensive, and sometimes free, to implement
–Involve a commitment of time and effort in place of money and resources.
– Unexpected, sometimes shocking, to the consumer.
–Concentrate on cooperation and relationship-building, rather than competition and strong arm sales tactics.
–Promote brand awareness and customer loyalty.

The best approach to creating an effective guerilla marketing campaign is to determine where your target customers are, and find a unique way to reach them.
